Mother And 12-year-Old Daughter Found Dead In Kanchanaburi Flood
BANGKOK, Thailand – A 55-year-old woman and her 12-year-old daughter have been found dead after their pickup truck was swept off a road by strong floodwaters in Kanchanaburi’s Thong Pha Phum district, with the search spanning two days through remote terrain and hazardous conditions.

The vehicle was carried into a fast-flowing current on a road in Ban Huai Suea, Chalae subdistrict, at about 5pm on 27 September. Two men were rescued, but the mother and daughter were swept away. Officials, rescue workers, national park staff and local residents searched the area until 10pm that night before calling off the operation because of darkness and hazardous floodwaters.

The search resumed on 28 September, when teams set up a temporary command centre in the remote area, with phone and internet signals unavailable at the location adding to the difficulties for those involved. At about 3pm, search teams found the girl’s body beneath tree branches around 300 metres from where the pickup had been swept away, and the mother’s body was discovered around three hours later beneath a large branch about 10 metres from her daughter, with both bodies having been pinned under tree branches.

They were taken to Thong Pha Phum Hospital for examination before being returned to their family for religious rites early on 29 September. The incident highlights the risks for anyone driving in rural Thailand during periods of heavy rain and flooding, including foreign residents, tourists and those travelling to remote national park areas.
