Philippine officials say an outbreak of a deadly water-borne disease has claimed at least four lives in the flood-stricken southern region. Health officials said Tuesday that 128 cases of leptospirosis have been confirmed and that further 200 people are suspected of being infected. The disease is caused by a deadly bacteria from flood waters.
Seismologists say a powerful earthquake measuring 7.0 rocked southern Japan Sunday, but there were no reports of damage or casualties, and no tsunami warning was issued. The U.S. Geological Survey put the epicenter of the quake in the Izu islands, 486 kilometers south of Tokyo. The quake struck at a depth of 371 kilometers.
Chinese health officials say a man who tested positive for the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus died Saturday in the southern city of Shenzhen. City officials said the 39-year-old bus driver, surnamed Chen, was hospitalized with a fever on December 21 and tested positive for the virus.

An explosion at a warehouse in Burma’s largest city has killed at least 17 people and injured more than 100. Authorities said firefighters were fighting a blaze in the Rangoon warehouse district before dawn Thursday when the explosion occurred. Conflicting reports said the building was housing gunpowder, chemicals or medical equipment.
