Two Travellers Held at Suvarnabhumi With $1.7m in Undeclared US Cash
BANGKOK, Thailand – Customs officers at Suvarnabhumi International Airport have detained two foreigners who arrived from Indonesia after allegedly trying to smuggle US dollar banknotes worth about 56 million baht into Thailand.

The pair were stopped on 30 September when officers searched their luggage on arrival from Jakarta and found the cash stashed inside, according to Santanee Phairattanakorn, director of the airport’s passenger control customs office.
Thailand’s Customs Department reported arresting two foreign passengers at Suvarnabhumi Airport on September 30, 2026, after finding concealed US dollars worth more than 56 million baht.
The two passengers arrested at Suvarnabhumi had arrived from Jakarta, Indonesia, and Customs alleged violations of exchange-control and customs laws.
Travellers carrying cash or negotiable instruments into or out of Thailand can check the rules with the Customs Department on 1164.

Santanee said the department is maintaining surveillance and screening of high-risk travellers to curb cross-border currency smuggling, and reminded anyone carrying Thai or foreign currency, or negotiable instruments, in or out of the country to follow the relevant rules and laws fully.
