PHUKET, Thailand – A 49-year-old woman has died after a 9mm pistol discharged inside a rented room in Phuket’s Koh Kaew area late on 24 September, with the officer who reported the incident telling investigators a round remained in the chamber when he racked the slide of his government-issued handgun before it fired, striking his mother in the head.

Police were called shortly after midnight to the rented-room building in Moo 1, Soi Koh Kaew 3, Koh Kaew, in Phuket’s Muang district, where the victim, the reporting officer’s 49-year-old mother, was found with a serious gunshot wound to her head. Emergency responders rushed her to Vachira Phuket Hospital, but she later died of her injuries.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Sakon Krainara, an investigator at Phuket City Police Station, attended the scene with Police Colonel Chatri Chukaew, the station superintendent, and other officers. According to the preliminary account, the weapon was a 9mm Glock 19 handgun belonging to the authorities, and one round was still in the chamber when the officer operated the slide.

Phuket forensic officers examined the room and seized the handgun and a cartridge case as evidence for testing, and police said legal procedures would follow.
