KOH PHANGAN, Thailand – A 30-year-old Russian man identified as Mr. Maksim has been detained by immigration authorities for overstaying his tourist visa by 194 days while living in a local temple due to financial hardship.

Homeless Russian-Canadian Man Arrested on Koh Pha Ngan for 1,599 Days of Overstay

The Surat Thani Immigration Office confirmed the arrest after receiving reports from concerned villagers and the local village headman, who noticed the foreigner’s prolonged stay at the temple. Investigations revealed that Maksim had entered Thailand on a tourist visa, which expired six months ago. With no means to support himself, he had been relying on temple donations for food and shelter.

Authorities charged him with “residing in the kingdom without authorization”, a violation of Thailand’s immigration laws. He was transferred to Koh Phangan Police Station for further legal processing.
