BANGKOK, Thailand – Bangkok police have arrested a 40-year-old Singaporean fugitive wanted on drug and violence charges in his home country, seizing crystal methamphetamine, bomb-making precursor chemicals, and lethal poisons during a raid on a high-rise condominium in Bang Khae district on Thursday. The operation, led by Pol. Maj Gen Teeradej Thumsutee, deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, followed a three-month investigation triggered by a tip-off to the Office of the Narcotics Control Board’s 1386 hotline regarding a suspect displaying violent and sexually deviant behaviour while under the influence of drugs.

Officers raided the suspect’s residence, arresting the man identified only as Joel and seizing three grams of crystal methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, 200,000 baht in cash, two mobile phones, and a selection of hazardous materials. The seized chemicals included half a kilogram of potassium nitrate, sodium metabisulfite, aqueous ammonia, nitric acid, borax, five gas canisters, and two ignition devices, raising immediate concerns about the suspect’s intentions.

Initial investigations revealed digital evidence indicating that the suspect had allegedly placed an 18,000-baht order for lethal weapons-grade toxins. While Joel claimed he intended to use the chemicals to take his own life due to depression after being defrauded of 2.5 million baht by an associate, investigators expressed scepticism due to the sheer volume and hazardous nature of the materials. According to police, evidence and operational patterns discovered on the suspect’s mobile phone show preparations involving lethal toxins, and authorities warned that had their action been flawed or delayed, a severe disaster could have occurred.

Subsequent coordination with Singapore’s Central Narcotics Bureau confirmed that the suspect is a high-priority criminal who fled to Thailand in 2024 to evade prosecution, with an extensive criminal record for both drug and violent offences. He reportedly admitted to serving multiple prison sentences in Singapore, totalling nine years, and receiving three strokes of the cane prior to his escape. Police initially charged Joel with unauthorised possession of a Class 1 narcotic, illegal drug use, and overstaying his visa, while expert evaluations have confirmed that the confiscated chemicals were insufficient to construct a lethal explosive device on their own.

All the materials have been sent to the Forensic Science office for further testing as additional charges are considered. The case has highlighted the effectiveness of international cooperation in tracking down fugitives and the importance of vigilance in preventing potential attacks. The suspect remains in custody, and the investigation continues to determine the full extent of his activities and intentions. The public has been reassured that authorities are taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of the community.
