PATTAYA, Thailand – A dramatic hostage standoff at a toy shop near a school in Nong Prue ended with a 31-year-old employee rescued and a knife-wielding man subdued on 29 September 2026, with police later saying the suspect was high on methamphetamine and believed officers were chasing him.

Pol Capt Chanchai Sanguansaksri of Nong Prue Police Station was alerted at 4.35pm to a distressed man threatening a woman with a knife at Felita House and Toy on Soi Nernplub Wan. Superintendent Pol Col Nattapon Phongsuksakul dispatched patrol and investigation officers, district officials and Sawang Boriboon Pattaya rescue volunteers. The siege unfolded as school let out, drawing pupils, parents and residents.

Inside, 32-year-old Wirachai, known as Foo, stood behind the counter holding scissors to the employee’s neck with a cutter knife in his other hand. Officers moved bystanders back and tried to negotiate by phone, but he refused to release her. When he was distracted, police used a spare key to unlock the door and Lt Col Suphat Sutsong gave the signal to move in. Wirachai waved the knife at officers but was quickly restrained, and the hostage was freed with only a minor hand wound.

A security guard at the school opposite, 49-year-old Chumphae, said he had seen the suspect pacing aggressively with his hand repeatedly in his pocket, behaviour he likened to drug use. Fearing for pupils, he ordered him away and called students back inside before the man crossed to the toy shop.

The employee said the suspect burst in looking frightened, pleaded to hide from police “for just a moment” and claimed he had done nothing wrong before seizing the blades. She managed to call the shop owner to check the CCTV before officers arrived.

Police said drugs were found in his system and that he admitted taking yaba, becoming paranoid and convinced police were after him. He was taken to Nong Prue Police Station to calm down before being handed to investigators for charges and further legal action.
