BANGKOK, Thailand – A 27-year-old man who rode a jet ski along a flooded Phetchaburi Road on Sunday evening, deliberately carving waves through the deluge, has been arrested, fined and handed a suspended jail term after the stunt drew widespread attention on social media.

Video of the incident showed the rider accelerating and making sharp turns, sending water spraying across pavements, pedestrian bridge steps and roadside walls. Some local outlets reported that residents complained, as others were also using the submerged street, and several motorcyclists could be seen navigating the area while cars sat abandoned after their engines stalled. The rider initially posted the clip on Facebook with the caption “B K K D R I F T,” though the account and post later disappeared.

Makkasan police detained the rider on charges of causing a public nuisance and obstructing traffic, and also charged the person who filmed the video with supporting the offence. During questioning, the rider reportedly said he was unfamiliar with Thai culture because he studied abroad and only wanted to make people smile during a difficult time. Police impounded the jet ski and planned to seek its forfeiture.

The Bangkok North Municipal Court sentenced him to one month in prison and a 10,000-baht fine, reducing the term to 15 days and the fine to 5,000 baht for his guilty plea, before suspending the jail sentence for a year and placing him on 12 months’ probation.
