PHATTHALUNG, 15 August 2012 (NNT) – A peat swamp forest fire has been raging in Phatthalung’s Noknamtalay Noi National Park, damaging over 210 rai of land.
According to correspondents at the scene, the thick smoke from the fires began to blanket lake areas in both Phattalung and Songkla’s Ranode district. Residents commuting between the two provinces have been urged to take extra precaution while driving.
Talay Noi park chief Chai Suwannachart said four forest fires have been discovered on private land, bordering 30,000 rai of protected areas, dubbed Thailand’s Amazon forest.
Currently, firefighters are still unable to contain the fire as the blaze has been increasingly intensifying.
Local authorities are urging residents in the province not to use fire to clear forests or to burn forest residues in the swamp forest. If necessary, residents are advised to construct and line up a fire-proof barrier before starting any fires near the government-owned forest land.
