In a high-profile case involving transnational crime, three South Korean nationals were sentenced for the brutal murder of their compatriot, Roh Eui Jong, near Pattaya, Thailand. The crime, which took place in May 2024, shocked both local and international communities due to its calculated and violent nature.

The victim, Roh Eui Jong, a 34-year-old South Korean national, was lured to Thailand under false pretenses.
Roh was killed by the suspects, who then stuffed his body into a plastic barrel filled with cement. The barrel was later dumped into the Map Prachan Reservoir in Bang Lamung District, Chonburi Province.
Post-mortem examinations revealed signs of severe trauma, indicating a premeditated and violent act. Even after Roh’s death, the suspects demanded a ransom from his family, falsely claiming he was alive and being held captive.

Two defendants, aged 28 and 40, received life imprisonment. The third defendant, aged 27, was sentenced to 25 years in prison, South Korean news agencies reported. The court cited the premeditated nature of the murder and the cruelty of the crime in its verdict.
Thai police, in cooperation with Interpol and South Korean authorities, tracked the suspects across multiple countries. One suspect was apprehended in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and another in Vietnam. The third was arrested at his residence in Jeongeup, approximately 220 kilometers south of Seoul.
