Donald Trump is sworn in as 47th president of the US

Donald Trump was sworn in this Monday as President of the United States in what will be his second term in the White House. The ceremony, due to the extreme cold in Washington, did not take place outdoors, but was held inside the Capitol. The day began with a religious ceremony at St. John’s Episcopal Church and continued with the traditional tea at the White House, which the president-elect and the incoming first lady, Melania Trump, had with the outgoing president, Joe Biden, and the first lady Jill Biden. Afterwards, both politicians traveled together in the same vehicle to the Capitol.

The heavy frost that has been ravaging Washington for days has not prevented the US capital from being decorated this Monday for an atypical presidential ceremony in which Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States. He has done so in an event without incident that because of the cold and snow has had to move inside the Capitol for the first time in 40 years. During his first speech as president, Trump has promised that his second term will be marked by massive deportations and the fight against immigration (advancing that he will send troops to the border with Mexico), the imposition of tariffs on the rest of the world and start a “new golden age” in which the country will be reindustrialized and end with environmentalist policies.

“From today our country will flourish and be respected around the world,” said Trump, who said that along this Monday ‘will sign a series of historic executive orders and will begin the complete restoration of the United States and the revolution of common sense’. The measures range from toughening against immigration, ending the green new deal and gender policy, to changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America or ending what he called “censorship of free speech”.

The beginning of Donald Trump’s speech has adopted a nationalist tone in which he has spoken of the national “rebirth” of the US and has assured that “the decline” of the country “has ended” at the moment of his inauguration. “As of this moment, the decline of the United States is over,” he has affirmed. “America will soon be bigger, stronger and far more exceptional than ever before,” Trump has affirmed.

The ceremony was attended by Silicon Valley tycoons such as Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk, CEO of companies such as SpaceX, Tesla, and X (Twitter), and for the first time, foreign leaders such as the President of Argentina, Javier Milei, the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and the Salvadoran President, Nayib Bukele, attended the ceremony.

The day has begun with Trump and first lady, Melania Trump, participating in a religious service at St. John’s Episcopal Church, near the presidential residence. The Trumps arrived at the church along with their son, Barron. At the service, the president was surrounded by the tech moguls who have approached him during the transition period. Mark Zuckerberg (owner of Meta), Jeff Bezos (owner of Amazon and the Washington Post), Tim Cook (CEO of Apple), Shou Chez (CEO of TikTok) or Elon Musk (owner of Tesla, SpaceX and X), also a member of Trump’s Cabinet for this term.

After the religious ceremony, Trump went to the White House, where he was received by the outgoing president, Joe Biden, and the first lady, Jill, with whom he participated in the traditional tea and coffee. This symbolic gesture of peaceful transition is a tradition that returns eight years later, since in the last elections the now president did not recognize Biden’s victory. After the meeting, the two couples rode together in the same vehicle to the Capitol for the inauguration.

After the ceremony, Trump and his vice president, J.D. Vance, who was also sworn in, participated in the traditional luncheon with lawmakers at the Capitol. Due to the cold, the traditional parade from the Capitol to the White House will not take place and, instead, Trump will move to the Capital One Arena, where 20,000 supporters of the tycoon have gathered to celebrate the inauguration. The day will end for Trump with the signing of his first 100 executive orders, with which he intends to reverse some of the policies of former President Biden, although his team has not yet specified when he will take that first symbolic step in his decision making.
