Several killed in Swedish school shooting, including suspected gunman

At least ten people were killed Tuesday in a shooting at the Risbergska Campus School, a center for adults in the city of Örebro (Sweden). Among them was the alleged gunman, according to a press conference given by the Swedish police, who have not concluded the operation. The attacker is reported to be of Syrian origin.

The police, who received a tip-off at 13.30 local time, had qualified what happened in a first appearance as an attempted murder, arson and serious weapons offenses. “Several people have been injured by gunfire and one of them is who we suspect may be the perpetrator,” the Örebro police chief, Roberto Eid Forest, said at the time.

In his second intervention, held two hours later, Forest reported a dozen dead inside the building and an undetermined number of wounded. While declining to give exact figures, he assured that the emergency services are following up. Initially, the police said that the incident had left five people injured.

On the other hand, the agent pointed out that “there does not seem to be any terrorist motive behind the attack”. “We are working with the secret services, but as far as I know the shooter is a person unknown to the police,” he said, explaining that the first data suggest that he acted alone and is not related to criminal gangs.

“We continue to believe that we have the main perpetrator, although we do not rule out that there are more people involved,” said the police chief. “We are currently identifying the victims,” he added, adding that the operation remains open and the situation is still ‘unclear’. “I want to point out that the situation can change and that is the image we have at the moment,” he stressed.

Following the shooting, students took shelter in nearby buildings and several ambulances and rescue services were dispatched to the school. Örebro hospital emptied the emergency room and intensive care unit to treat the wounded, public broadcaster Radio Sweden said.

“At the moment we are confident that there will be no more attacks. The schools where teachers and students were sheltered have already been evacuated,” said the police chief, referring to several nearby schools that were used while officers scoured the area. Even so, the authorities recommend the population to stay away from the center and have set up an information point for families and relatives.

Lena Warenmark, one of the school’s teachers, told SVT public television that at the time of the shooting there were fewer students than usual on the premises because many had gone home after finishing their exams. “We heard three explosions and loud screams,” Andreas Sundling, 28, told the Expressen newspaper as he took shelter in a classroom.

Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has received the news about the incident “with sadness” and assured that the government is closely following the developments. “Today is a very painful day for all of Sweden. My thoughts are with everyone whose school day was affected by terror,” the prime minister posted on his social networks, where he added that what happened is ”a nightmare that no one should have to experience.”

“The operation is still ongoing and it is important for the public to follow the information from the police. My call is also for us to now give the Police the peace of mind they need to investigate what happened and how these horrible crimes could have happened,” the prime minister has added.
