The Flood, Storm, and Landslide Relief Operations Center has issued a warning for strong winds and rough seas in the Gulf of Thailand from January 27 to 29. The Thai Meteorological Department forecasts a moderately strong cold air mass spreading over northeastern Thailand and the South China Sea, bringing cooler temperatures and strong winds to northern and northeastern regions. Increased rainfall, with heavy rain in some areas, is expected in eastern and southern provinces, particularly Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, and Phatthalung.
Thailand Faces Temperature Drops, Heavy Rain, and Rough Seas This Weekend
In the lower Gulf of Thailand, stronger winds and rough seas have prompted authorities to advise small boats to remain ashore during this period. Coastal residents along the Gulf are urged to exercise caution due to the heightened risk of adverse weather conditions, which include heavy rainfall and gusty winds.
According to the center’s deputy spokesperson, Sasikarn Wattanachan, the government continues to provide financial relief to flood-affected households in 16 provinces. As of now, over 592,000 households have received 9,000 baht each, totaling more than 5.3 billion baht in aid. The remaining households are currently in the process of receiving their assistance.
The advisory coincides with the Chinese New Year festival, during which weather conditions are expected to be cool, dry, and windy. Authorities warn the public of increased fire risks due to these conditions and encourage residents to take precautions. Burning activities are discouraged to reduce the impact of PM2.5 during the celebrations.
Heavy Rain and Flood Warnings Issued for Southern Thailand
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has directed all relevant agencies to monitor the situation closely and prepare for potential emergencies. Residents are urged to stay updated on weather conditions through official government channels and to adhere to safety guidelines to minimize risks.
