At least four people have been killed and dozens injured in a multiple hit-and-run at the Christmas market in Magdeburg, in northeastern Germany and capital of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt. Police have arrested the driver of the vehicle that ran over the crowd of people, which the regional authorities have defined as an attack.
The Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt, Reiner Haseloff, told the press that the detainee is “a man from Saudi Arabia, a doctor who has been in Germany since 2006”,, reported Agence France-Presse.

According to the German newspaper Bild, the attack occurred after 7 p.m. in the evening, when an individual driving a dark-colored BMW rammed into the crowd at the Christmas market, causing panic among passers-by, who tried to flee the area.
The manager of the Christmas market has called on the residents to leave the city center, while videos posted on social networks show images of the market shortly after the incident, with several ambulances in the area.
