Wat Phra Kaew and The Grand Palace is a must see if you’re visiting Bangkok.
The Temple of the Emerald Buddha or Wat Phra Kaew (วัดพระแก้ว) is regarded as the most sacred Buddhist temple in Thailand. It is also known as Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram and located in the historic centre of Bangkok (Phra Nakhon district), within the precincts of the Grand Palace.
The magnificent Emerald Buddha, which is the most sacred Buddha image in Thailand, is found in the Main Assembly Hall of the newly-built Royal Chapel of the Wat Phra kaew. King Rama I brought the image of the Emerald Buddha, which is regarded by the Thai people as the palladium of the Kingdom, from the palace in Thon Buri.
This huge complex hosts over 100 buildings and temples, to highlight the Chakri Mahaprasat, the largest hall in the Grand Palace. Wat Phra Kaew grounds also three pagodas, among them the Phra Si Ratana Chedi and the famous Phra Mondop, the library. The Temple of the Emerald Buddha is also house of Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles and the Chakri Maha Prasat and Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Halls, as well as the impressive and magnificent Bussabok Mala Maha Chakraphat Phiman and the Phuttan Kanchanasinghat thrones.
Originally the Emerald Buddha image was enshrined at Wat Arun (วัดอรุณ) Temple of Dawn, and transferred to Wat Phra Kaew in 1785.
The entrance fee for Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace is 500 baht for foreigners and free for Thai people. The Grand Palace and the temple have a strict dress code; men must wear long pants and shirts with sleeves, women must be similarly dressed and are not allowed to wear short skirts. Sandals without ankle straps can’t be worn. There is a booth near the entrance to rent appropriate clothing.
