WASHINGTON– Democrat Hillary Clinton won New York but Republican Donald Trump nabbed Texas, giving him a substantial Electoral College lead after one of the most contentious presidential campaigns in U.S. history.
With polls closing in a wave of central, eastern, and southern states, Trump’s projected victories gave him a solid lead for the popular vote, as well as in the all-important Electoral College.
In addition to New York, Clinton’s projected win in Illinois gave her a chunk of votes.
But both campaigns were anxiously looking at so-called batteground states like Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Ohio, where the races were still too close to call.
