Four deaths in Four days raises concern for Mount Everest

Husband of Melbourne Woman, Maria Stardom has today announced he is struggling to think of a life without his wife. He has vowed to not leave Nepal without her body. The retrial of a Melbourne woman’s body from Mount Everest was delayed yesterday, due to bad weather, however attempts to retrieve have recommenced. Doctor Maria Strydom’s death was among four others who died over the weekend on the mountain. Stardom suffered serious altitude sickness before passing at an altitude of about 7,800 meters near camp 4 on Saturday.

Strydom’s remains have yet to be recovered following her death, on Saturday. She had gone without any oxygen for 20 hours prior to her passing. This was due to the length of time if took for the couple, and sherpas to get down the mountain and to camp 4. Her husband, Robert Gropel, is currently recovering from altitude sickness. The pair wanted to climb the mountain to crush stereotypes related to their Vegan diet.

Stardom was not the only one to pass on the mountain with various other climbers dying from falling and temperature related illnesses. Crew Member Phurba Sherpa died Thursday following a fall, Eric Arnold died Friday; and Subhash Paul died on Sunday.

Nepal’s tough mountain stands at 29,035ft (8,850m) high. Many have died on the mountain since 1921, with over 200 still on the mountain under snow, in crevices and even out in the open.

Most climbers die whilst descending from causes including fatigue, avalanches, injury and altitude related sicknesses.

You have to be at least 16 to attempt the climb, however Nepal, since 2015 have discussed raising this to 18, and forbidding disabled climbers. Deaths on the mountain increased after the 1980s with climbers ascending 8000m past the previous heights.

Most climbers are non-natives, physically fit, and between the ages of 30 and 50. One death occurs for every 10 assents. As of 2014, 265 deaths were counted, however there is no accurate number.
