Body parts in Chao Phraya of Spanish national, says Bangkok police

Police in Bangkok found the dismembered body of a Spanish citizen who was seen alive for the last time on 20 January in the city, a police spokesman said on Thursday. Police believes the perpetrators are foreigners and Thai nationals may have been involved.

According to the Thai media the deceased was identified as David Bernat, a 39-year-old business consultant from Les Garrigues in Catalonia, working in the telecommunications industry. Bernat had spent five years working in Asia, as indicated in his Linkedin profile, and traveled from Iran to Thailand on January 19, one day before he disappeared.

Relatives of the victim reported him missing a few days ago, according to sources close to the victim.

Thai authorities suspected that the man was kidnapped, extorted and then killed and dismembered. Police also said that the killers transferred money from David Bernat’s bank account to several countries, including Singapore and Spain, and to different accounts in Thailand.

Authorities have suggested that there are more than one suspect who allegedly are still in the country, and they could be arrested in the next 48 hours. Lately police named Artur Segarra Princep, 36, as a suspect of the murder of 39-year-old David Bernat.

The first remains of the body were found on Saturday on the Chao Phraya River, which crosses the Thai capital, and since then more body parts have appeared, according to sources.

A friend of the victim described the businessman as a “normal, friendly and hard-working” person.
