5.0 magnitude earthquake aftershock hits Chiang Rai

CHIANG RAI, 12 May 2014 (NNT) – Seismic activities continue in the northernmost province of Chiang Rai, with a 4.8-magnitude quake reported today in Phan district and a 5-magnitude quake in Mae Lao district.

One week after a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Chiang Rai province on May 5, the National Disaster Warning Center today at 6.05 pm reported an aftershock measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale in the area. The tremor was located 9 kilometers deep in Phan district. At the same time, another 5-magnitude quake at the depth of 8 kilometers jolted Mae Lao district. The force could be felt in Chiang Rai municipality and in nearby provinces.
