Elephants celebrate Thai Elephant Day with giant fruit cake

PRACHUAB KHIRI KHAN, 13 March 2012 (NNT) – The Hutsadin Elephant Foundation in Hua Hin is celebrating the Thai Elephant Day today by providing a 25-ton fruit cake for the pachyderms under its care.

All the elephants at the Hutsadin Elephant Foundation in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan, today have got a chance to enjoy a gigantic fruit cake, consisting of watermelons, bananas, sugar canes, and pineapples, arranged in tiers to look like an enormous cake; on the occasion of the Thai Elephant Day, which falls on March 13 of every year. A large number of foreign and local tourists, as well as volunteers from South Africa who have travelled to the country to study the lives of Thai elephants, also take part in the celebration.

The Hutsadin Elephant Foundation annually holds a giant fruit cake activity in order to raise awareness among locals and tourists on the importance of the Thai elephant, an animal which has been long been part of the Thai society and has served as the mode of transport for ancient Thai monarchs. Additionally, the activity also aims to promote eco-tourism and create a steady career for elephant raisers.
