KHON KAEN, 16 February 2012 (NNT) – Thai Deputy Transport Minister Pol Lt-Gen Chatt Kuldilok said the railway to the North East needs major improvement in order to reduce traffic jams in this part of Thailand.
Pol Lt-Gen Chatt said while visiting Khon Kaen province to observe the progress of the 5th and 6th phases of the railway development plan in Isan that it is important that the rail transportation be improved in this region given that most farm products here are being transported on roads.
The construction of rail links is said to lure producers of farm products away from roads and encourage them to rely on train services to deliver their produces. According to the report, phases 5 and 6 of the railway development plan start from Kaeng Khoi junction to Bua Yai and from Buayai junction to Nong Khai province respectively.
The Deputy Transport Minister said it would reduce the number of trucks using the road in the North East and improve the traffic congestion.
