BANGKOK, March 12 – Thailand’s anti-government Red Shirt movement on Saturday held a mass rally to mark the one year anniversary of the beginning of the group’s demonstration to oust the Democrat-led coalition government with the seven protest leaders expected to join the crowd for the first time after their temporary release.
Supporters of the United front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) gathered at Democracy Monument on Rajdamnoen Avenue from noon amid tight police security. Some roads leading to the avenue are being closed.
The Red Shirt began their intensified campaign against the Abhisit Vejjajiva administration on March 12 last year. The rally against the government was prolonged for ten weeks with sporadic clashes between the protesters and security forces and ended on May 19 after the protest leaders surrendered to police.
