SURIN, 18 February 2011 (NNT) – Surin provincial governor Mr. Serm Chainarong said 120 more bunkers will be built along the border to protect the inhabitants from artillery raids from Cambodia.
Mr. Serm said some border residents have evacuated to temporary shelters of the government while those remaining in the area have been hiding in bunkers for fear of shooting attacks, as experienced by villagers in Si Sa Ket Province. According to the governor, communities on the eastern border have been declared disaster-hit zones while authorities are planning to build as many as 120 more bunkers to accommodate the remaining villagers and to buy hand-held raid warning devices.
Mr. Serm added that there are currently 144 bunkers in four border districts of Surin and the construction of 120 more will proceed although there have been no reports of border skirmishes in the province so far.
