THE hitman who murdered a disabled divorcee on the orders of her ex-husband may die in prison after being jailed for life on Wednesday.
Paul Cryne, 62, would have served at least 32 years – the same as the man who hired him, Graham Birchwood – but a judge at the Old Bailey reduced his minimum tariff to 28-and-a-half years because of the time he had spent in a Thai prison.
He was found guilty on Tuesday of murdering 52-year-old Sharon Birchwood for a share of her £475,000 legacy.
The victim’s former husband, also known as George, is already serving a life sentence for masterminding the plot to kill her in her Ashtead bungalow in December 2007.
Cryne, who still holds the Guinness world record for swimming the longest distance underwater in 24 hours, met 65-year-old Birchwood in Thailand through the ex-pat community.
